Love Bridgnorth SHROPSHIRE’S BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLIES
Shropshire’s Beautiful Butterflies

Local nature lover Roger Littleover has been thrilling Love Bridgnorth with his pictures of the Bridgnorth otters, and also has stunning landscapes. But his passion is for nature generally – and in particular butterflies.

He’s drawn my attention to the great work being done in the Shropshire areas of conservation. Elan Valley Pipeline and Prees Heath have produced good numbers of Silver-studded Blue and Pearl-bordered Fritillary, and the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary have done very well as a result of the conservation in these areas.

Roger attended a few work parties last year clearing brash and brier, and is keen to highlight the important work Mike Williams and Stephen Lewis, who head up conservation for Wyre Forest and Lewis Prees Heath respectively, do for Butterfly Conservation in Shropshire.

So why not join in one of the activites and go and help out or merely enjoy these wonderful creatures in their natural habitat?

Saturday  21 May – Siege Wood, Woolhope Butterfly Walk

Meet at 1pm at Siege Wood in Herefordshire close to the village of Woolhope (GR SO605343). SiegeWood is owned by Mark O’Brien and Liz Vice and is of great importance for butterflies, moths and other animals.
The nationally declining Wood White butterfly has colonised in recent years as the site has gradually been de-coniferised. The rare Pearl-bordered Fritillary breeds in nearby Haugh Woods and it is hoped may take up residence here too.
Nine hibernating dormice were found in one coppice coupe this winter! The flora in the open areas rivals that of any limestone grassland.
Leader: Mark O’Brien. Contact prior to the date: Kate Wollen on 07786 526280, contact on the day: Liz Vice on 07749 880277.
